Showing off the sporting skills of robots has until now been confined to the mechanical meltdown that is robots pummeling seven bells out of each other and some fairly impressive footwork from football playing machines, now a company called Nuvation have created a machine that could be appearing at an amusement arcade near you soon.
The air hockey automaton is an industrial rig loaded with an optical sensor programmed to follow and react to a specific target.
Taking on its doubters at the Freescale Technology Forum the machine won 90% of the time and spooked its opponents by appearing as if it had stopped playing.
The almost mocking non-motion of the static playing arm still managed to block most of the incoming shots.
