It’s a Sony one-two in the Japanese sales chartsLast week we reported that the PSP was holding onto the number one slot in hardware sales in Japan, by quite a margin. Now last week’s release of Metal Gear Solid 4 means both the PSP and PS3 are way ahead in the Land of The Rising Sun.

Between 9 and 15 June over 75,000 PS3 consoles were gobbled up by eager Japanese gamers, most likely buoyed by the much-awaited MGS4. Great business, considering the console only shifted 10,000 the previous week.

The PSP also continues to do a roaring trade, selling 64,675 compared to the Nintendo DS (39,201) and Wii (45,564).

Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 continues to struggle, selling a paltry 2,163 units by comparison: a trend that looks to continue for a console that’s never caught the Japanese’s imagination. Even the PS2 (7,297 units) sold more.

How long Sony’s success lasts remains to be seen, taking into account MGS4 was a console exclusive.

But with Sony hardware consistently outperforming Nintendo, the deposing of Nintendo in the hearts of the Japanese is a possibility, for now.

With major PS3 titles like LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, Resident Evil 5, Singstar 2.0, Soul Calibur IV, Resistance 2 and Gran Turismo 5 still to come, things are looking great for Sony.

Looking at what’s up ahead for Nintendo or Microsoft, we just can’t see how either can match up.
