iPhone 3GUPDATE: O2 says it hasn’t yet released pricing for iPhone PAYG tariffs, and that the numbers below aren’t official.

“We have no update on pricing for PAYG iPhone at this time,” an O2 spokesperson told us. “We will let you know more about this when we can.”

Still, if Italian figures are anything to go by, our wallet’s in for a pounding if we’re to get a PAYG iPhone fix next month. Read our original post below.

We knew the iPhone 3G wouldn’t be cheap when it landed on pay as you go tariffs, but we didn’t expect it to be this expensive.

Stuff.tv is reporting the 8GB iPhone 3G will cost a whopping £370 when it goes on sale next month, while the 16GB will crumple most wallets with a £470 price tag.

That’s a gigantic leap from the free handsets being offered on O2′s monthly contracts, but the UK prices seem to match Italian ones, clocking in at €499 and €569 respectively, so these prices could be the real deal.

Since it’s a pay as you go deal, don’t expect many bundled minutes or free texts, although we’d expect pre-pay customers to get the same free internet access and Wi-Fi benefits as contract-paying iPhone owners.

We’ve asked O2 for confirmation. Stay tuned for more as soon as we hear it.

Out July 11 | From £370 | O2 (via Stuff.tv)
