Google Android faces delays

Android LogoReports are circulating that all is not well in the Android camp. Far from being on track to tackle the iPhone and usher in an open-source mobile revolution, it’s facing delays and painful frustrations for developers.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google’s next-gen mobile operating system is struggling against a number of factors.

“This is where the pain happens,” Android chief Andy Rubin told the paper, “We are very, very close.”

However, it’s understood that pressures to finalise the first phones to run Android software are slowing development.

T-Mobile USA is reportedly taking a lot of Google’s attention, since it wants to launch an Android phone in the fourth quarter of 2008. As a result, the search giant has less time to focus on other partners.

Likewise, China Mobile is having trouble translating Android into Chinese characters, and developers are reportedly becoming frustrated by Google’s constant changes to Android’s code.

Can Google sort out its delays and keep Android on track? With competition looming in the shape of Apple’s 3G iPhone and brand new 3rd party software, it needs to, and fast.
