A version of HTC’s Vista/Windows Mobile hybrid packing GPS was spotted on Expansys’ US site by eagle eyed Jenn K. Lee over at Pocketables. Initially it looked like a mistake in the listing, but further investigation reveals it does exist, there’s just a slight catch.
According to an Expansys rep commenting on the post, they initially agreed that it looked like they’d been given incorrect information by their supplier.
However, a little later the rep was back - with slightly better news: “The UMTS units DO have GPS. BUT – GPS ONLY works for TeleNav in SnapVUE. GPS does NOT work in Vista. The UMTS devices (X9501) are the only devices in the world with GPS enabled in SnapVUE.”
SnapVUE is HTC’s name for the custom version of Windows Mobile the Shift runs in instant-on mode.
So there you have it - GPS is available, but only when you’re in Windows Mobile and not in Vista. Glad we got that sorted out.
