Lotus taxiThe maker of some of the UK’s finest speed machines, Lotus is turning their attention to green motoring, preparing to create the world’s most ecological…. minicab.

Yep, Lotus has plans to create a zero emission London cab by 2012.

The design will use an electric motor, powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. By 2014, Lotus says it’ll be introducing it to other cities.

Testing on the new cars is due to start in the next 18 months, while Lotus also works with Jaguar on a separate project, to create an eco-friendly limousine.

It’s intended that the green limo will crank out carbon dioxide emissions below 120g per kilometre, using a petrol engine and special electric motor.

Both projects form part of a £23 million Government-backed initiative to develop 16 new low carbon vehicle programmes in the UK. For those looking for a little more speed, Lotus also has green versions of it’s high performance sports cars.
