When a TomTom executive let slip the firm had a version of its software already up and running on the iPhone we were beside ourselves with joy, then an internal e-mail seemed to squash the story flat. Now we’ve got an official statement from TomTom, and it’s good news!
According to the GPS giant, there is indeed a version of TomTom’s software running on the iPhone deep within its labs. However, the company’s eager to point out that there’s no official announcement to go with it, and certainly no release date.
There’s not even a guarantee it’ll be made available commercially, but the good news comes from TomTom’s attitude to the iPhone.
“We think it is a good sign that Apple is entering the GPS world;” TomTom says. Iit supports our thinking that the demand for digital maps will continue to grow strongly. The iPhone 3G runs Google maps and Tele Atlas is a supplier to them.
“Together with Nokia, Apple is developing pedestrian navigation demand, which we see as complementary to the already developed demand for dedicated car navigation solutions. With more and more people getting acquainted with navigation, this will also further grow the demand for car navigation.”
