The Big M’s not satisfied with owning the majority of the PC market, or even shovelling Windows Mobile into smartphones. Now it wants to dominate satnavs too.
It’s announced a new version of Windows, ready to be embedded into GPS boxes.
Called Windows Embedded NavReady 2009, it includes Live Search integration as standard, as well as Bluetooth support and Windows SideShow functionality, letting satnavs serve up e-mail or calendar information from Vista laptops in the vicinity, without having to fire them up.
The new software is based on Windows Embedded CE, and according to Microsoft, will let satnav manufacturers simplify the creation of their products.
It’s also claimed the software will create a simpler user experience, as well as making maintenance more straight forward.
What do you reckon? Is Windows on your satnav a good idea? Or maybe you’ll just hold out for GPS software on Apple’s new 3G iPhone instead.
