Seat Ibiza EcomotiveGetting yourself a green motor doesn’t mean switching to hydrogen, or even hopping inside a hybrid. VW and Seat are both proving you can still save the planet, even while burning precious petrol. They’ve just unveiled the Polo BlueMotion and new Ibiza Ecomotive respectively.

Both cars kick out just 99g of carbon dioxide per kilometre, making them exempt from London’s congestion charge, and neatly dodging road tax too.

Both companies say they’ve used lightweight materials, streamlined aerodynamic design and cutting edge engine technology to achieve the efficiencies, while still reaching 60mph in under 13 seconds, as well as topping 100mph without struggling too much.

Best of all, both cars squeeze a 70 mile range from a single gallon of fuel. It’s an impressive feat, but attendees at Green Car Guide Live reckon it’ll only last so long: if the Government lowers its threshold for tax exemption again, manufacturers will be right back where they started.

Time to invest in more complete eco-friendly alternatives then.
