It wasn’t long ago that Sony’s PSP was accused of having no direction. But you wouldn’t know it over in Japan. The all singing all dancing handheld has fought off competition from everyone to keep pole position at the top of the Japanese hardware sales charts.
It seems the folk over in the land of the rising sun can’t enough PSP action, selling over 17,000 more units than its nearest competitor - the motion-sensitive obsessed Nintendo Wii.
Sony’s handheld sold 62,016 units followed by the Wii’s 44,639, with the DS coming in third at 35,020. Of the next- gen consoles the PS3 again comes ahead of the Xbox 360, scoring 10,856 to the 360’s 2,280.
Despite earlier ramblings of the PSP losing it, the sales don’t exactly represent a turnaround in the PSP’s fortunes since it’s been doing great in the Far East anyway.
But how long can the PSP hold on. We suspect the launch of PS3 exclusive-Metal Gear Solid 4 will shift a few PS3 sales. Snaaake, Snaaake!
