Space Station robotic armAfter acheiving infamy last week fixing the toilet troubles on-board the International Space Station the mobile servicing system, or MSS for short has released pictures of itself in an attempt to prove its much more than a zero-gravity bog brush.

The near 60 foot arm can travel the entire length of the Space Station attached to rails located along its length. Its seven motorised joints have the strength and flexibility to perform one of its trickiest tasks, docking the space shuttle and taking on-board payloads for the craft.

At the end of the arm, in addition to the powerful pick-up gear, there’s the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator, or Dextre as he is known on-board, this smaller two-armed robot handles the more delicate tasks and his hands can be fixed with various power tools and other equipment according to the job in hand.

Also at the end of the arms are force movement sensors so it doesn’t get too heavy handed, while the cameras strategically placed about its person give the crew inside a panoramic view of the outside whilst they float in the comfort of their front-room eating dried ice cream. Oh what a life!
