Handpresso Wild portable coffee makerCompass: check. Penknife: check. Hand-powered espresso machine: check. Thanks to Handpresso Wild you can now explore the wilderness and still expect a decent cup of coffee.

It’s the smallest and lightest coffee machine we’ve come across and the first one to forego electricity in favour of hand-power, which makes it perfect for intrepid explorers who like their caffeine. A rugged carry case is also available from Silvernutmeg.com http://www.silvernutmeg.com/ for £19.

Simply insert an ESE coffee pod (you can buy these at most supermarkets) and pump up 16 bars of pressure before pouring in one cups-worth of boiling water for a single espresso, then contemplate the advantages of civilisation before popping it back in your rucksack. Remember, there is no Starbucks in the jungle – yet…

But coffee pods? I mean, I know you’re in the woods and all. But even I use a manual hand grinder on fresh beans before I’d use stale pod coffee.

Fresh roasted coffee is like fresh baked bread. And who wants their bread pre-sliced, individually wrapped, and going stale for weeks in shipping and on store shelves after it’s made?

Any coffee format that takes its lead from inkjet printers (i.e., consumers making their own “ghetto pods”) is ultimately doomed anyway.

I know what you mean about pods and getting locked into buying one specific type. I’d prefer beans or ground if I were making a coffee at home any time, but out in the field I’d have to go for the pods. They’re each vacuum sealed so they keep pretty fresh and there’s no chance of them getting wet in your pack. One word: convenience.
