papero_main.jpgCould this be the new face of childcare? Well today, of course, it wouldn’t be legal to leave your offspring in the hands of an electronic assistant but PaPeRo (Partner-type Personal Robot) is unlike anything seen so far in robot development, and being increasingly task tested in childcare activities.

Full of natural expression, and with the ability to remember its owners’ interests and preferences, the ability to recognise 650 phrases and speak more than 3000 and even able to, with the latest image recognition technology, recognise faces – Child-minding could prove easy enough perhaps for this pint-sized plastic carer.

Speaking at the Cheltenham Science Festival, Professor Noel Sharkey of the University of Sheffield voiced fears over parents leaving offspring in the hands of “robot role-models” and whilst not legal in a commercial sense, there would be nothing to stop parents using them at home.

There’s no doubt these robots could be great for keeping an eye on the kids and keeping them entertained but we’d voice the same concern as the Professor that kids brought up by Robots could well prove to have some difficulty interacting socially in later life.

Their only freinds being vending machines, pinball tables and gaming consoles – Sounds idyllic to some perhaps.
