External graphics cards for laptops are a bit like buses - nothing comes along for ages then two turn up at once. Hot on the heals of the re-announced Asus XG Station, ATI has taken the wraps off XGP.
Like the Asus setup, XGP - eXternal Graphics Platform - uses the PCI Express interface to mainline pixels into your laptop’s central nervous system. The external box has a whopping 4GB of bandwidth to play with in each direction, so even the most demanding of tasks shouldn’t prove a problem.
ATI’s interface also includes USB 2.0, so you also get additional ports to plug things into. The external box supports both DVI and HDMI connectors and is capable of crunching though 1080p high def video without batting an eyelid.
