We’ve already heard about some great Android apps and features recently demoed. And now Android’s project leader has hinted at a shiny new app store to get hold of them.
“It would be a great benefit to the Android community to provide a place where people can go to safely and securely download content and where a billing system would allow developers to get paid for their effort,” Andy Rubin told The Register.
Rather than keep the app software under lock and key like Apple, Google says it would make it open source, so developers can play around with it and customise it where necessary.
“They can add to it. They can remove from it. They make it their own,” Rubin added. “They can rip out all the Google stuff and put in all Yahoo! stuff.”
If you haven’t already heard, there are some cracking apps already lurking in the wings. One of our favourites is AndroidScan, letting users scan barcodes from products to quickly grab reviews and pricing from the web.
Another fascinating one is Commandro, which tells you where your mates are, thanks to GPS in their own phones.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. Possible iphone beater? It’s looking more likely all the time.
