Sony’s been touting its OLED telly tech for a while. The trouble is, its screens have always been tiny. Now head honcho Howard Stringer says we’ll have a 27-incher to play with “within 12 months”.
That means we can finally mark the card of our LCD and plasma tellies. OLED offers staggeringly thin screens (less than a millimetre in some cases), full HD pictures, and unbeatable colours.
It’s the holy grail of home cinema, and now Sony says it’s coming sooner than we thought.
Demonstrating an OLED TV just 0.3mm thick at the D: All Things Digital event, Stringer said: “it’s a glass, we can produce this in plastic and you can wrap it around your arm, we’re not quite sure why you would want to. We’re looking for applications for the next generation of the plastic version but this will come out in a 27-inch version fairly soon. Within the next 12 months, we haven’t given a date.”
