Street Fighter might’ve flopped, as did Doom, and Tomb Raider, but that won’t stop Capcom milking its game franchises for all they’re worth at the cinema. It’s revealed plans to make a new batch of video nasties, based on its family of household-name game titles.
According to Capcom’s president, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, the company will soon pummel a load of licences in the direction of film-makers,
“We are in the process of working out contracts for several offers we received at the Cannes Film Festival last week and hope to make an announcement soon,” he told Bloomberg.
“If realised, the projects will have a big impact on the game and movie industries.”
You’ll forgive us for being sceptical. Capcom’s previous movie releases have been dire at best. The Resident Evil series is probably the most successful, alongside its three Street Fighter films (one of which is still in production), although anime adaptations of its characters are more popular in the Far East.
There’s an anime version of Devil May Cry that’s already been aired in Japan, for instance, while another film is planned for release this year.
So maybe it could be good news after all. We’re not holding our breath though.
