Mac video conversion gets a Turbo boost

May 22nd, 2008

Elgato Turbo.264Elgato just updated its Turbo.264 converter stick with tasty new software, bringing DVD chapter markets, multi-channel audio and slick new YouTube uploading to make converting videos faster than ever.

In case you weren’t aware, the Turbo.264 is a simple USB add-on that makes compressing videos much faster. Its plug-in processor takes the load off your Mac’s processor, and crunches video faster than anything else.

Now, the new software adds support for DVD chapter markers (so you can skip through with ease when watching a converted video on the Apple TV, iPod or iPhone). There’s also a Dolby Digital Passthrough for Apple TV, so surround sound effects are preserved.

By far the most useful addition, however, is direct YouTube uploads. Edit your video, choose the new YouTube preset, add a title, description and tags and type in your YouTube login details. The rest is all automatic. Turbo.264 compresses your clip to make uploading faster, while retaining optimum quality. Since YouTube loves files in H.264 format, it’s a match made in heaven.
