American super-network AT&T just announced it’ll have rolled its 3G infrastructure out across the whole of the US by the end of June. Funny, since we’ve heard of something else that’s 3G dependent coming in June…
Yep, AT&T’s announcement coincides neatly with Steve Jobs’ keynote on June 9th. If we’ve ever expected a 3G iPhone, it’s now.
See, AT&T’s new network will boast maximum speeds of 1.4 Mbps which it says “will be as speedy as logging onto the high speed Internet service that many consumers enjoy at home.”
That, in all honesty, is a lie. To achieve that speed you’ll have to stand directly under a transmitter, since 3G speeds trail off dramatically with distance. What’s more, if you’ve still got a 1.4 Mbps broadband service at home, your last name might as well be Flintstone.
Still, progress is progress, and anything that hurries along the launch of a 3G iPhone that the rest of us can enjoy too is a good move in our books.
