One (touchscreen) laptop per child

The $100 laptop program just got a much needed refresh. Gone is the clunky green housing of the original budget notebook, and in swoops this, a touchscreen wonder without a keyboard, that’s actually cheaper than its predecessor.

Clocking up a price tag of just $75, it’s the next-gen laptop for developing countries being mooted by the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organisation.

“You can fold it flat and use it as one continuous display,” OLPC founder Nicholas Negroponte said at the laptop’s unveiling.

Its screen is specially designed to work in bright sunlight, while the lack of a hardware keyboard means there’s chance of a less mechanical failure.
