The BBC’s iPlayer has been a runaway success, surpassing 75 million streams to cement its status as the on-demand service of choice for telly fans.
It’s not all good news though, the Beeb’s under pressure from Internet service providers unhappy at the extra bandwidth being used.
Requests for 21 million programmes in April meant a 20% increase in streaming traffic across the UK month on month.
That’s a hefty increase, and one the BBC is solely to blame for. What’s the answer? Should the BBC use some of its licence fee cash to shore up ISP’s bandwidth? Maybe it should be installing local servers in exchanges to take the weight of ISP’s nation-wide wiring?
