Down Devon way they have a baby bot which they hope will develop and improve it’s skills based upon initial input from the University staff.
It is hoped the baby robot can be taught to talk with the help of language specialists who currently work with kids and the aim is to replicate the nurture process currently provided by parents and increase knowledge from standard and basic initial input.
It is called iCub and has a £4.7mn backing, the consortium behind the ambitious bid beat 31 others to grab the cash and have named the project Italk - Integration and Transfer of Action and Language Knowledge in Robots.
Angelo Cangelosi, Professor of Artificial Intelligence said: “The outcome of the research will define the scientific and technological requirements for the design of humanoid robots able to develop complex behavioural, thinking and communication skills through individual and social learning.”
We’ll put our hands up right now as the outfit willing to teach it valuable social skills for later life. You know, getting served at bars ahead of mass crowds and cheesy chat-up lines. That sort of thing. iCub, just give us a call when you’re ready.
