Apart from the discovery of Penicillin, the first crossing of the Atlantic in an aircraft, and the opening of the worlds first Yo-Yo factory, 1928 also saw the creation of Gakutensoku (to learn from natural law) – It was the worlds first “modern” robot and built to wow attendees at the Japanese Emperors inauguration.
The robot disappeared for a while, but now it’s back thanks to a $200k grant spent on replacing its internal compressed air system and using a modern pneumatic computer controlled system.
Gakutensoku stands an impressive ten feet high and its movements, whilst largely simplistic, involving tilting its head, moving the eyes, smiling and puffing up its cheeks and chest to order, it really brings this behemoth of a robot to life in a creepy yet friendly manner, much like many of Scooby Doo scaremongers. Check out the video below to see it in action!
