BD-Live is the super-clever tech behind online interactivity on Blu-Ray, and now we know some of the new tricks it’ll bring to films. Even if the first disc to use the brand new features is Disney’s Sleeping Beauty…
Perhaps the most bizarre new feature to creep into the BD-Live equipped discs is a customized version of Sleeping Beauty’s DVD menu. It’ll change according to online weather reports, so the sky behind Disney’s castle logo reflects the weather outside your window.
Bob Chapek, president of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, hopes the release “will revolutionize the way people will interact with, and view, movies in the home.”
Viewers will also be able to play trivia games across the web and chat on screen with others watching the same film, as well as sending messages to friends via a laptop, Blackberry or PDA. Perfect for telling the kids when dinners ready then.
“Parents don’t have to worry,” Chapek said. “We’re trying to connect families, so for example your daughter can talk to her grandmother in Cincinnati while they are both watching the same movie, and you can leave the room and not have to worry.”
Don’t have a grandma in Cincinnati? No problem, this is just the first of a load of Blu-Ray titles with online skills. A word of warning though, gadgeteers. At the moment Sony’s PlayStation 3 is the only Blu-Ray player capable of using BD-Live features.
