Screenshots are flying across the internet showing a new version of the iPhone’s software, sporting a switch to “Enable 3G”. It seems legit, and could mean the next-gen Apple phone has better battery life than any other 3G blower around.
According to the Apple-watchers at Macrumors.com, the option to enable 3G data on the iPhone is hidden within the latest release of iPhone software 2.0 Beta 5, which is already in the hands of developers crafting applications with Apple’s SDK.
By default, Macrumors says the preference is hidden, but one developer (Chronic Productions) has activated it.
Of course, it’s still no use until the 3G iPhone actually arrives. Chronic Productions says “this is not fake… but will normally not show up on an EDGE iPhone.
“Turning 3G on will just crash the phone if you use an EDGE phone… decrypt the beta5 rootfs dmg, and see for yourself in /Applications/Preferences.app/Network.plist”
