The Wii remote is one of the great gaming innovations of all time, and it seems Apple’s in agreement. The latest patent documents from Cupertino show the Mac maker considering a similar controller for the Apple TV.
Speculation is rife that the planned controller will open the Apple TV up to more games, and possibly even web surfing from the comfort of the couch.
Referring to the Apple TV box as a “console”, Apple’s filing details a remote exactly like Nintendo’s, and even moots slotting game cartridges into its TV box.
“[The] console also can have one or more connectors to which accessories can be coupled. Accessories can include cables and/or, game cartridges, portable memory devices (e.g., memory cards, external hard drives, etc.), adapters for interfacing with another electronic device (e.g., computers, camcorders, cameras, media players, etc.), or combinations thereof,” the patent explains.
Tasty stuff. If Apple’s planning to shovel more advanced games onto its TV companion, it certainly needs a neater control mechanism. Watch this space: Apple TV’s not done yet.
