OLED TVs are definitely the future, but it’s clear they’ve still got a long way to go. Research firm DisplaySearch just released findings on Sony’s super slim XEL-1, showing its lifespan is just half what Sony says it is.
After running a pair of Sony’s OLED TVs for 1,000 hours DisplaySearch found that blue luminance dropped by 12%, whille green fell by 8% and red by 7%.
According to the figures, Sony’s new screens would lose half of their brightness after running for 17,000 hours. Not good when Sony claims they’ll last for 30,000.
Sure, 17,000 hours is just under two years of continuous watching, but when LCD screens can last upwards of 80,000 hours, it’s clear there’s still lots of work to be done on OLED.
