The Ghostbusters gameNow we’ve finally got our hands on Grand Theft Auto 4, we’re looking forward to the next great game of 2008, and the smart money is on Ghostbusters.

Written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, it’s a third person shoot em up where your character is recruited as the fifth ‘buster, alongside Peter Venkman, Egon Spengler, Ray Stantz and Winston Zeddmore, tackling the ghostly inhabitants of New York City two years after the second film.

Due for release in October, it looks nothing short of mind-blowing. The gamers at Joystiq just had one of the first previews of it in action, and already its graphics are a delight.

But it doesn’t stop there. Joystiq reports that battles with ghosts take place indoors, outdoors and in precarious locations like rooftops. Brilliantly, the essence of the Ghostbusters films has been captured, with our spectre-chasing heroes seemingly unable to trap a rogue spirit without trashing everything around them.

As well as wielding a proton pack, gamers will be able to pull out the slime canon from Ghostbusters 2, coating everything in sight with sticky goo. But best of all is news that Ghostbusters will be multiplayer.

When played on the PS3 and Xbox 360, you’ll be able to join friends for a four-player battle across specially designed levels. On Wii, you’ll use the remote to control the proton pack, and have the option for four-player games using a split screen. Aparently, there’s also the option to play multiplayer battles as ghosts, although details are still sketchy on that part of the game.

All in all, it sounds awesome. Now all we have to do is make GTA 4 last ‘til October.
