Make no mistake, PlayTV is high on our gadget wishlist, but at this rate we’ll have to move it to our Christmas list, or put it out of our minds altogether.
First HMV reckoned the PlayStation 3’s TV tuner would be launched in March, then Amazon chipped in this morning with a July 31st release date. Now that’s been pulled, and the latest is that the TV box won’t go on sale until October.
The trouble, according to techradar.com, is with the codecs needed by the PlayStation to decode Freeview HD signals. However, since the format for Freeview’s HD signals has yet to be finalised (along with the broadcasters using them) we find that hard to believe.
Since Sony has demonstrated its ability to update the PS3’s software with new firmware, why can’t it release the box with standard def functions, and add HD when it’s all finalised? Answers on postcards, or in the comments section below.
