Apple likes to champion itself as the only mobile company that controls the hardware and the software that combine to make its handset so special. But Microsoft could get in on the act too.
Not only has the Big M slapped down the necessary cash to buy Danger, manufacturer of the Sidekick mobile, but has been showing off an extremely slick new version of its mobile operating system.
Windows Mobile 7 was peeped by Pocket Now at an official Microsoft event, where the software giant also let slip that it’ll launch by the end of next year.
However, since the iPhone will be nearly two years old by then, Pocket Now is speculating the Redmond-based firm will crank out its own handset running the software before then.
See, the 2009 release date for WM 7 is for third party phone makers and developers only. Microsoft itself can release it whenever it likes, provided there’s a handset to sell it on. And since it looks in extremely good shape at the moment, it makes sense to assume that could be sooner rather than later.
Is Microsoft about to put a stop to Apple’s shenanigans and launch its own brand handset? It looks more likely than ever. Stay tuned for more as we hear it.
