Psystar is cheekily marketing its latest PC as “OpenMac, the Apple alternative” and recommending Leopard for an operating system. OpenMac is made from regular PC components and looks like an ordinary tower, but its creators are describing it as “a PC that works just like a Mac with Apple’s latest operating system OS X 10.5.” The advantage being the price, just $399, and the way you can upgrade it exactly like a PC.
Your basic OpenMac has a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB of DDR2 memory, a 250GB drive and 4 USB ports, so it’s comparable with Apple’s Mac Mini, but more affordable and expandable. Psystar is already offering to upgrade the graphics card for example.
As MacRumors points out though, the use of Leopard on non Apple-branded hardware is a violation of its End User License Agreement and prohibited, so we’re waiting to see how the Cupertino company will respond.
