UPDATE: Fancy getting your own hands on Hitachi’s super-slim telly? We’ve got good news: the 37 and 42 inch models will be available this month, and the optional tuner hits shelves in September.
We’ve managed to get our sweaty paws on an early sample of the UT32MH70, which has got to be the skinniest television in Europe right now - it’s just 35mm thin (as you can see from the second picture above), which is less than half the thickness of most 32-inch LCD TVs.
Actually, it’s not strictly a television, because it doesn’t have a built-in tuner - you’ll actually have to hook up an external source via HDMI or VGA. We’ve been using it with our Sky HD box and Xbox 360, and it’s a decent all-round performer with both HD and standard def pictures. We wouldn’t say it’s sitting right at the top of the telly pile at the moment, but it’s only a couple of tiers down.
The big draw here is definitely the design, though: it’s super-thin and super-light (less than 11kg), which means it’s the perfect screen for wall-mounting - the best one around, in fact (yep, even better than Sony’s newer but fatter E4000 series). Until the 37 and 42-inch full 1080p versions arrive later this year, anyway…
