Okay, so it’s pretty much a given that a new version of the iPhone is coming, it’s coming pretty soon and it’s going to have 3G. We can be pretty confident about those things.
But what else can we expect from iPhone 2.0? Well, as usual the Internet is buzzing with rumours and speculation. Some reckon we’re going to see OLED screens and a skinnier body.
Well, Greek iPhone site iPhone Hellas has been picking through the iPhone 1.2.0 beta firmware with the finest of fine-toothed combs, and has highlighted some things that have us more excited than ever.
For instance, where the old firmware had a string that mentioned “HeadsetBT” - a reference to the bog standard Bluetooth included with the iPhone - the new one says “HeadphonesBT” and “RoleA2DP”. Hmm - that strongly suggests stereo Bluetooth support for proper wireless headphones.
Then there’s a mention of “RoleGPS” - so is Apple adding a full-on location-locker. And “RoleRemote”? That sounds like you might be able to use the handset as a remote control for the Apple TV or for a Mac…
Apple never confirms anything until it’s good and ready, but don’t be too surprised if the new iPhone is the truly multitalented device we were all hoping the original would be.
