Are Microsoft making a Wii-like remote? It’s no secret that the Wii’s main appeal is its motion-sensitive controller, and now it seems Micrsoft’s keen to copy it, with reports from MTV claiming the Big M has its own Xbox remote up its sleeve.

Of course, the Xbox already has a remote for controlling DVDs, movies and music. It was even bundled free with the console’s ill fated HD-DVD drive, but this is something entirely different. A motion-sensitive handset specifically designed for gaming.

According to MTV’s unnamed source, the Xbox will soon have a motion controller, Mii-esque avatars and a brand new interface to accomodate the system.

What’s less encouraging is that the project has reportedly been a troublesome one, suffering delays and setbacks since its inception. “Microsoft is trying to decide how to get something out by the end of the year,” said MTV’s insider. “[Xbox] marketing just wants it so they can match the Wii point for point. The biggest parts of their marketing materials outline how easy it would be for third parties to port their Wii games to the 360.”

We already know Microsoft’s battling against the Wii with the price of its Xbox 360, but going after its controller, interface and even games? That’s just mean! More news as soon as we hear it.
