We’ve heard it’s coming (and that it isn’t) more times than we care to remember, but Microsoft’s latest denial of Blu-Ray for the Xbox 360 makes us think they’re really serious.
See, Microsoft’s head of Xbox, Neil Thompson, has told the BBC that downloads will form the future of video (and presumably games) for the console with discs dying out altogether in the next “two to three years.”
“We have always said online is the way to go,” he said. “We said to people they had the choice [with HD-DVD]; we didn’t force it on them as we didn’t put it in the box.
“Our belief was that in the lifetime of the Xbox 360 we were going to move to this online world and online distribution for content outside gaming. If we didn’t believe that we would have put a hi-def player in the console.
“We think it’s better to focus our efforts and resources on developing services in the digital domain.”
So there you have it. Microsoft’s going to pummel more HD video and games to the Xbox using broadband. A nice plan, if only we could get around our ISP’s monthly usage caps…
